About Us

Prior to the formation of Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation on March 16, 2010, following the 2009 judgment of the Gujarat High Court, the city was the only notified area capital of any state in the country, where the city was not governed by any elected body. But after the formation of the corporation, taxes were made for the residents by the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation. As a result of which the inclusion of the city in the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission made it possible to receive development funding from the Government of India and now the city is leading the way in providing excellent civic services and various infrastructural facilities.

At the same time, it provides the best civic services to the residents at home.Recognized as a dynamic state of the country in terms of development, Gandhinagar, the capital of Gujarat, is located at the west-central point of the Industrial Corridor between Delhi, the political capital of India, and Mumbai, the economic capital of India, and about 23 km north of Ahmedabad, the economic city of Gujarat. Gandhinagar, the newly settled capital of Gujarat, is located on the west bank of the Sabarmati River, about 545 km north of Mumbai and 901 km south-west of Delhi. There is the provision of parks, extensive plantations, and recreation areas along the river. The extensive greenery here has also given the town the identity of a Green City. The famous Akshardham temple is located in Gandhinagar. The city was named Gandhinagar as Gujarat was the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi.

History

City planning of Gandhinagar was performed by Architect and Chief Town Planner H. K. Mevada who had studied at Cornell University and his assistant Prakash M. Apte who has worked under the hands of the world-famous architect Le Corbusier.

Demographics

According to the 2011 census of India, Gandhinagar has a population of 2,02,776, Of Which, the male population is 1,05,779 and female population is 96,997.  The male literacy rate is 85.5% (90418 Males) and Female literacy rate is 79% (76625). Total literacy rate is 82.4% (1,67,043 persons). There are 19,597 children under the age of 6 years. Of which, 10,806 are boys and 8791 are girls. 

Geography

Gandhinagar has an average elevation of 81 meters or 266 feet above sea level. The city is located on the banks of the Sabarmati river in north-central-east Gujarat. It is spread over an area of ​​205 kilometres. The Sabarmati River, which runs close to the city, dries up in the summer, but now the SantSarovar dam has been built on it. Gandhinagar is the green capital and has a 54% green area.

Climate

Gandhinagar has a tropical humid and dry climate with three main seasons of summer, monsoon, and winter.

The weather is generally dry and hot, except in the monsoon. The maximum temperature is 36 to 42 degrees Celsius and the minimum is 19 to 27 degrees Celsius. The weather is very hot from March to June. But winter days are pleasant and cool at night from December to February. The monsoon from south-west direction creates a humid climate from mid-June to mid-September. The average annual rainfall is about 31 inches. A State Emergency Disaster Management Center has also been set up in Gandhinagar.

Airport

Ahmedabad-based SardarVallabhbhai Patel International Airport is 18 km from Gandhinagar, where domestic and international flights are available.

Railway facility

Gandhinagar Capital Railway Station is located in Sector 14. Many vehicles running on western areas pass through Gandhinagar. There are currently 5 trains running from this station including 3 express trains and two Memu trains. The Jaipur-BandraGaribRath, Haridwar Mail for Delhi and Haridwar is the main express train running for Delhi and Shanti Express Indore Junction. Ahmedabad Railway Station in Kalupur, the nearest railway junction is 25 km away. Which is connected by rail to all major cities and towns in India.

Metro-Link Express for Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad

The Gujarat government has implemented a plan for fast transport in the city by proposing Metro-Link Express for Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad (Mega) known as Ahmedabad Metro and the project is moving towards completion.
